TORONTO (AP) — The Liberal Party has won the federal election in Canada, culminating a process marked by U.S. President Donald Trump threats on a trade war and of making the country the 51st American state.

The U.S. president’s 51st-state rhetoric and trade war bolstered Canada’s left, but the ultimate responsibility for the country’s direction lies with its own voters.

Mark Carney’s Liberal Party is projected to win a federal election that played out against a backdrop of Trump’s trade war and annexation threats.
