The Sixers say McCain is "progressing well," but after meeting with his surgeon on Thursday, it was decided to sit the rookie out indefinitely.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Philadelphia 76ers coach Nick Nurse said Sunday that Jared McCain is in OK spirits after the team ruled him out for the rest of the season following knee surgery on Dec. 17.

The 16th overall pick in last summer’s draft, McCain had been a bright spot during the Sixers’ rough start to the season (15-20, 11th in the Eastern Conference). He earned Rookie of the Month honors in November and was an early frontrunner for Rookie of the Year.

The Philadelphia 76ers gave a heartwarming gift to Jared McCain for the star rookie's accomplishments earlier this season. The former 16th pick from the 2024 NBA Draft has been a revelation for the Sixers. Until McCain was ruled out indefinitely after tearing his meniscus, the former Duke star was the favorite in the Rookie of the Year race.

McCain suffered the torn meniscus in his left knee on Dec. 13 during a 121-107 loss to the Indiana Pacers. He underwent surgery to repair the tear and his return was indefinite. Repairing the meniscus was better for McCain's long-term prognosis with the injury. However, it also meant there would be a longer recovery.
