As Southern California continues to grapple with devastating wildfires, remnants of a massive winter storm will coat regions across the Mid-Atlantic with more snow before exiting Saturday morning.

Twenty states, from Texas to Delaware, were on alert Friday for snow and ice as the storm continued to move across the South.

At least 46 million people were under a winter storm warning as of Thursday as the storm spreads along the Gulf Coast Friday, according to the weather service. The storm should weaken by Saturday, bringing lighter snow between 1 and 3 inches to parts of the Northeast, the Mid-Atlantic and the Ohio Valley before exiting off the Carolinas.

Brutal cold will open the door for a winter storm to take a somewhat unusual track through the South and create treacherous conditions.

Between two and three inches of snow are expected Friday night in Metro Detroit. A Winter Weather Advisory was issued for southeast Michigan ahead of the snow storm. To date, Metro Detroit has seen just six inches of snow for the entire winter - compared to average of 14.5 inches.

A powerful winter storm that unleashed heavy snowfall and coated roads with ice across much of Texas and Oklahoma has pushed into the South, leading governors to declare states of emergency and prompting widespread school closures.

A low-pressure system is moving across the country, delivering rain, snow, and ice to much of the southeast. This same system will be making its way along the east coast early this weekend, bringing a chance for accumulating snow to the tri-state.
