Frustration boiled over as McDavid wrestled free and delivered a "brutal cross-check," as described by one of the Sportsnet game announcers, that struck Garland in the head, sending him to the ice.

The Oilers captain was given a major penalty in the dying seconds of the team’s 3-2 loss to the Vancouver Canucks. This was due to McDavid cross-checking Canucks forward Conor Garland in the head following a lengthy battle between the two in the middle of the Vancouver zone.

Edmonton Oilers tempted fate once too often on Saturday, and this time they paid for it. They dug yet another deep first-period hole against a spirited Vancouver Canucks squad, allowing all 3 goals in 3½ minutes late in the first period including a pair of powerplay tallies by first star Quinn Hughes.

It wasn't just Saturday night against the Canucks. The Oilers star hasn't been drawing penalty calls all season.

The Vancouver Canucks snapped their two-game losing streak on Saturday with a 3-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers. Quinn Hughes scored twice, while Danton Heinen also beat Stuart Skinner as part of a three-goal first period. As for Thatcher Demko, he stopped 13 of 15 shots for his third win of the season.
