The Western population of the monarch butterfly hit a near-record low with fewer than 10,000 found living in California this winter, a foreboding sign.

This winter’s count is only a few thousand above the species’ all-time low of less than 2,000 in 2020. The count was conducted across 257 sites west of the Rocky Mountains, said Isis Howard, endangered species conservation biologist for Xerces Society.

In just over a decade, India has doubled its tiger population to more than 3,600, accounting for 75% of the world's tigers. These tigers now inhabit an area of 138,200 sq km (53,360 sq miles) - roughly half the size of the UK - alongside some 60 million people.

India doubled its tiger population in a little over a decade by protecting the big cats from poaching and habitat loss, ensuring they have enough prey, reducing human-wildlife conflict, and increasing communities’ living standards near tiger areas.
